The Story Behind the Cheese

Suga’s Pimento Cheese was born out of the love for flavor and creativity in the kitchen. Stacey West, or as she’s most commonly referred to “Chef Suga” began her culinary journey at a young age, stating that God placed the desire to create and to serve others on her heart.

Chef Suga is an honor graduate of the acclaimed Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Atlanta. She’s worked with top chefs in the metro Atlanta area, including Chef Hilary of The Hill at Serenbe and Chef Holly, Executive Chef of Georgia Grown. Each of these experiences inspired Chef Suga to start a restaurant of her own.

In 2017, Chef Suga, her son Quinton and her husband Robert took over the Sunday brunch at a metro area restaurant. For two months, they spent their Sunday mornings in the kitchen serving up southern classics such as chicken and waffles, catfish po’boys, sweet potato corn muffins and their famous pimento cheese grits. The brunch menu was a hit, but the cheese grits stood out week after week as the most requested item. Soon enough customers were asking for the pimento cheese alone. After identifying this trend, Chef Suga decided it was time to give the people what they wanted and perfected two pimento cheese recipes (Original and Jalapeno) to be served and sold on their own.

With continued success at the restaurant, Chef Suga and her family began selling her pimento cheese at a local farmers’ market close to home. After selling out on day one, they knew they had to do more—more cheese, more markets, more happy customers!

Soon enough, two flavors turned into eight (and growing). Flavors now range from subtle and mild to south of the border hot with the use of local farm fresh peppers and real spiced cheeses, each unique flavor all its own. Customers began raving about the texture and flavor and eventually began requesting a vegan option. In true Suga’s fashion, Stacey went to work to create four 100% dairy-free vegan varieties with no soy, dairy or tree nuts and a pea plant protein. Suga’s Pimento Cheese is the only brand of pimento cheese in the south serving the vegan community.

Customers continue to rave about their favorite flavors, claiming it’s “the best pimento cheese” they’ve ever had. Adults and kids alike cannot get enough! This community feedback and Suga’s skyrocketing success are what keep her going. She continues to master her craft in the kitchen, perfect her recipes and dream up new flavors day after day.

With her new commercial kitchen, team of five market reps and her product in retail stores across metro Atlanta, Chef Suga is committed to keeping up with the demand for her Gourmet pimento cheeses. Each batch is made with love and appreciation for those that continue to support her.
